Marreco is a non-urban beach in Matosinhos featuring an extensive sand strip with rocky outcrops along the waterline. The beach is located in the Leça River basin and is classified as Type II. It is subject to official monitoring and bathing season regulations.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025. Sampling frequency: every 3 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Portuguese Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from local wastewater and rainwater drainage networks and from the Pampelido creek, which flows near the bathing water. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from tributaries during rainfall, which can entrain microbiological load. Contamination may also result from the local rainwater drainage network, wastewater network, or untreated effluents from malfunctions of intermediate pumping stations. Moderate potential for cyanobacteria blooms with historical occurrences; low potential for macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation.
