Metaurilia Strada a Mare is a beach near Fano in the Marche region, featuring fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint sand with a gentle slope of 1-3% across both emerged and submerged areas. The beach is protected by artificial emerged breakwaters and has an average width of 28 metres. The distance between mean low water and high water (safe water limit) is 80 metres, with astronomical tides ranging from 30 to 50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. The Fano sewerage network spans approximately 260 kilometres serving the entire urbanised municipal territory. Three active sludge treatment plants serve the area: Ponte Metauro (treats approximately 12,000 cubic metres per day), Bellocchi (approximately 2,000 cubic metres per day), and Ponte Sasso (1,000 to 1,500 cubic metres per day in winter, 3,000 to 4,000 in summer). The Ponte Metauro treatment plant serves populations greater than 50,000 inhabitants equivalent and has been monitored with 24 annual controls for four years, all compliant with legal limits. Discharge overflow structures exist along the coastal section.

Risks

Blooms of non-toxic microalgae (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during the 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing anomalous water discolouration. During intense rainfall, overflow discharge structures may release untreated wastewater through various discharge points.
