Austria Lake 1 - Excellent

Mondsee is the middle lake in a chain of three lakes in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. It covers an area of 14 square kilometres and reaches a maximum depth of 68 metres. The lake is one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut. Water quality issues from nutrient pollution in the 1970s have been resolved through the installation of sewerage infrastructure around the lake shore. Occasional turbidity occurs in spring due to rapid water warming.

Location

St. Lorenz, Mondsee, Upper Austria. The monitoring point is located at the bathing area.

Facilities

Showers and toilets are available. Dogs and other domestic animals are prohibited at the bathing water. Maximum daily bathers in high season: approximately 2,500.

Season

Monitoring and bathing season runs from June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Microbiological monitoring results from the past five years show consistently good quality. No point or diffuse pollution sources of significant concern have been identified in the immediate influence area.
