Monumento ai Caduti is a coastal bathing area in Pietra Ligure, Liguria, characterized by predominantly sandy beach with piers and a submerged breakwater running parallel to the coastline for a short stretch. The area is situated in lowland terrain with shipyards to the west. The bathing water was classified as Excellent during the 2008–2011 monitoring period.

Water

Coastal waters (CWA3 category with hilly terrain and low stability). The bathing area extends 0.739 km. The water body is named Ceriale-Finale. The Maremola stream is the associated hydrographic basin.

Location

Pietra Ligure, Savona Province, Liguria region. The Monumento ai Caduti bathing area is managed by the Municipality of Pietra Ligure (Piazza Martiri della Libertà 30, tel. 019629311). The Guardia Costiera (Coast Guard) station is located at Lungomare Matteotti n. 4/b, tel. 019856666.

Facilities

Private beach establishments (bagni marini) with associated services and other accommodation structures are present in the area.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2008–2011). No coastal wastewater treatment plants or active discharge pipes are present in the vicinity. Potentially toxic algal strains have been identified; monitoring since 2011 recorded threshold exceedances in July and August. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions.

Risks

Potentially toxic algal strain proliferation was detected, with alert threshold exceedances recorded in July and August during the monitoring period. A modelling approach for characterizing short-term pollution events and anomalous situations is under development.
