Foce Rio Chiappe is a bathing area located at the mouth of the Rio Chiappe river, which forms the border between Pietra Ligure and Loano in Liguria. The beach is predominantly sandy with a partially submerged pier immediately to the west, marking the beginning of Loano port. The area is classified as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability. The bathing water has been rated as excellent based on monitoring data from 2008–2011.

Coastal water body at the mouth of Rio Chiappe river in a flat plain area. Water body area: 0.381 km². The water body is classified as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability.

Location

Pietra Ligure, Savona Province, Liguria region, Italy. The bathing area is located at the mouth of the Rio Chiappe river at the border between Pietra Ligure and Loano. Parking and facilities are available through private beach establishments in the area.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with services are present in the area. The Commune of Pietra Ligure, Coast Guard, and emergency services (118, 115) provide support and management.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2008–2011). The bathing area is influenced by river discharge from the Rio Chiappe estuary. No wastewater treatment plants or active coastal pipelines are present in the area. Cyanobacterial blooms do not characterize the Ligurian Sea due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. No cases of proliferation of potentially toxic algal strains have been recorded in the past four years.

Risks

River mouth discharge identified as a pollution source. Short-duration pollution events and anomalous situations are under evaluation using a modelling approach in development.
