Mühlensee is a natural lake with an oval water surface of 5.7 hectares located in the transitional area between the Britz Plateau and the Zehdenick-Spandau Havel Lowland in the middle of Liebenwalde. The lake is fed by the Schönebecker Fliess stream, which flows from Wutzsee in the east and exits westward toward Beverinsee before joining the River Havel. In low-rainfall summers, the inflow ceases and the lake becomes standing water. Water transparency at the bathing area is typically between 0.5 and 1.2 metres during summer, with a mean value of 1 metre.
