Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Bernsteinsee is a gravel pit lake located approximately 30 km north of Berlin in the Barnim Nature Park. It is part of a group of five lakes excavated around 10 years ago in the sands of the Eberswalder glacial valley. The lake covers 25 hectares with a maximum depth of 25 metres and is fed by groundwater with no surface inflows. Water transparency at the bathing area ranges from 2 to 4 metres with a mean of 2.7 metres. The lake is popular for swimming due to its high water transparency and fine sandy shores.

Water

Gravel pit lake (Baggersee). Surface area: 25 hectares. Maximum depth: 25 metres. Water temperature range: 10.4–24.9 °C (mean 21 °C). pH range: 8.3–8.9 (mean 8.6). Water transparency: 2–4 metres (mean 2.7 metres). Salinity: less than 0.5‰ (freshwater). The lake is stratified during summer months. Groundwater fed with no surface inflows.

Location

Ruhlsdorf beach (Strand Ruhlsdorf), approximately 30 km north of Berlin in the northern Barnim Nature Park. The village of Ruhlsdorf borders the lake to the northwest.

Season

Monitored every four weeks in accordance with Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulations.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent (ausgezeichnet) for all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli (95th percentile): 127 CFU/100 ml (2021–2024). Intestinal enterococci (95th percentile): 69 CFU/100 ml (2021–2024). No single value exceedances of microbiological parameters recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms observed in the last 4 years.

Risks

No identified risks. No cyanobacterial blooms observed. No danger of future cyanobacterial mass development. No macroalgae or aquatic plant growth issues. No danger of bathing dermatitis from cercariae. Short-term microbiological pollution not expected.
