Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Niederweimarer See is a 15-hectare gravel pit lake located 6.5 km south of Marburg on the eastern edge of Niederweimar. Originally part of a gravel extraction site along the Lahn, the lake has been restored and now serves as a popular recreational bathing area. The lake features a large water ski lift facility, and swimming, windsurfing, and diving are also possible. It attracts up to 1,500 daily visitors during the summer season.

Water

Gravel pit lake (Baggersee) with a water surface area of 15 hectares, maximum depth of 13.9 metres, and average depth of 7.5 metres. The stable thermal stratification that develops in summer promotes water quality.

Location

Located 6.5 km south of Marburg on the eastern edge of Niederweimar, along the railway line. Access is via Federal Highway B3, State Road L3387, and the path along the railway line. The beach entrance is on the eastern shore. Parking is available at the facility.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, beach bar (Schirmbar), beer garden, water ski lift facility, wooden barrier separating water ski and bathing areas. Sandy beach approximately 350 metres long (150 metres fine sand, 200 metres terraced grassy bank with multiple water access points).

Season

9 May to 13 September 2026. Pre-season testing occurs before the season begins. During the season, monitoring occurs at least once per month.

Water Quality

Excellent water quality classification (Ausgezeichnete Qualität) across all monitoring years (2021-2025). Indicator bacteria (Enterococci and Escherichia coli) consistently remain below or near detection limits. Nutrient loading is very low. No known pollution sources from wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) development risk is minimal based on oligotrophic water classification. No observed mass cyanobacteria blooms during bathing seasons.

Risks

Temporary mass cyanobacteria bloom cannot be excluded despite very low nutrient loading. Health authority may recommend specific bathing behaviour or temporarily advise against bathing in case of cyanobacteria bloom.
