Wißmarer See is a former gravel extraction lake located north of Giessen in a meander of the Lahn River. The site was renaturalized and developed into a recreational area after mining operations ceased. The lake covers 9.6 hectares with a maximum depth of 4.3 metres and average depth of 2.35 metres. A swimming beach with a 300-metre sand strip and adjacent meadow is situated on the southwestern shore. Average visitor numbers are approximately 300 swimmers, with peak days reaching up to 1400.
