Launsbacher See is a former gravel pit lake located north of Gießen between the Lahn river and the BAB 480 motorway. The lake comprises three nearly separate basins, with the middle section designated for swimming. It covers 8.6 hectares with a maximum depth of 5.4 metres and average depth of 3.1 metres. Extensive submerged vegetation in summer inhibits algal growth, resulting in typically clear water.
