Solrød Strandpark

Solrød Strandpark is a 400-meter-long beach with fine sand and scattered small stones located in Solrød Municipality, Denmark. The beach is 20–30 meters wide and features child-friendly bathing conditions with gently sloping underwater terrain. A bathing pier is installed during the swimming season. The beach is situated in a coastal area of significant natural and recreational value, offering opportunities for swimming, nature experiences, and water sports.

Water

The water body is Køge Bay, classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, with depths under 2 meters extending approximately 150 meters from the coastline. Current direction is primarily from the south or north. The seabed consists of sand with small stones.

Location

Solrød Strandpark is located in Solrød Municipality, Denmark, accessed via Solrød Strandvej followed by Duevej, which leads to a parking area. A 350-meter accessible pathway lined with benches leads from the parking area to the water's edge and is suitable for wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties.

Water Quality

Water quality at Solrød Strandpark is classified as Excellent, based on routine monitoring samples taken during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September) for the period 2018–2021. Monitoring measures fecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The Excellent classification indicates very low concentrations of fecal bacteria. Solrød Bæk stream, located 150 meters north of the monitoring point, poses a potential pollution risk during rainfall when storm sewers from separated drainage systems can carry high concentrations of fecal bacteria. Skensved Å stream, located 2.2 kilometers south, has low influence on beach water quality. Solrød Treatment Plant, located west of the beach with a 700-meter discharge pipeline to Køge Bay, does not normally affect bathing water quality under normal conditions.

Risks

Risk of sudden pollution from incidents such as oil spills, chemical leaks, boat accidents, and sewage pipeline failures. Risk of fecal pollution from Solrød Bæk stream, particularly during rainfall, due to urban runoff from separated storm drainage systems, surface runoff from agricultural land, and discharge from properties not connected to the sewer network. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at the water's edge; swimming near large accumulations is not recommended as plant collections promote bacterial growth. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms and phytoplankton blooms. Glass, debris, and chemical pollution occasionally occur. Occasional issues with brown algae (Fucus) and seaweed.
