Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Almindsø is a deep lake located between Silkeborg and Virklund in Denmark. The lake contains two designated bathing areas: Østre Søbad in the southeastern corner and Vestre Søbad on the northern part of the eastern shore. Both bathing areas have sandy beaches and underwater sand extending into shallow water, with deeper areas predominantly sandy and muddy with aquatic vegetation. Large bathing piers have been constructed at both locations. Water depth increases rapidly from the shore, reaching up to 5 metres at the end of the piers.

Water

Almindsø is a deep lake with very low water exchange. Current speeds in the lake are typically very low with no dominant flow direction at the two bathing areas. The lake has low nutrient content in its water.

Location

Almindsø is situated between Silkeborg and Virklund, between Horsensvej and Søndre Ringvej. Østre Søbad is accessible from Horsensvej where a small car park is located, and via paths from Søndre Ringvej. Vestre Søbad is accessible only via a gravel road and paths from Søndre Ringvej and Horsensvej, with the nearest car park at Søndre Ringvej. The area surrounding the lake is predominantly forested except for the two roads.

Facilities

Bathing piers are present at both locations. Warning signs are posted when contamination or health risks are identified. Rubbish bins are available at the bathing areas.

Season

The bathing season runs from 1 June to 1 September, during which the municipality collects water quality samples at both Østre and Vestre Søbad.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last 4 years. There are no wastewater discharges into the lake. The only potential sources of faecal contamination are bathers and animals. Chemical contamination is possible only in the unlikely event of tanker accidents on nearby roads.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms is low in summer due to low nutrient content, though red blue-green algae blooms can occur in winter some years. Risk of other phytoplankton blooms is low. The lake is home to rare aquatic plants that bathers are advised to protect by avoiding the shallow water away from piers.
