Lyngsø is a 10-hectare lake in southern Silkeborg, Denmark, formed in a dead-ice hole from the last ice age. The lake has an average depth of 2.4 metres and a maximum depth of 7.6 metres, with a predominantly muddy bottom containing high organic content. Water plants are present and expanding throughout the lake, contributing to biological balance and water clarity. The lake's water quality has been restored through lake rehabilitation completed in 2021.

Water

Lake covering 10 hectares with average depth of 2.4 metres and maximum depth of 7.6 metres. The lake bed is predominantly muddy with high organic content at deeper areas. Sand bottom is present in some shallow areas including at the bathing site. Water plants are expanding throughout the lake.

Location

Lyngsø is located in the southern part of Silkeborg, approximately 100 metres north of Sdr. Ringvej. Access to the municipal area (Lyngsø Parken) with bathing facilities is from Lyngsøvej on the lake's east side. There is no parking facility at the park.

Season

Official monitoring season runs from 1 June to 1 September. During this period, the municipality collects water quality control samples.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Water quality was restored through lake rehabilitation in 2021. The water has relatively low nutrient content. Potential sources of faecal pollution are bathers and animals; all sewage and stormwater discharges were cut off during rehabilitation.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms are limited due to low nutrient content, though occasional blooms may occur in summer without causing health problems. Other phytoplankton blooms are unlikely due to low nutrient levels. Water plants can be experienced as a nuisance but are essential for biological balance.
