Thorsøbadet and Vesterlund are two bathing areas located in and around Lake Thorsø near Silkeborg in Denmark. Thorsøbadet is situated in the town's northeastern corner with a bathing platform and laid sand on the lakebed. Vesterlund is a privately owned bathing area on the lake's western end used primarily by summer house residents. Lake Thorsø is a relatively deep lake with an average depth of 4.2 metres and maximum depth of 8 metres, characterized by reeds in shallow water areas and natural muddy lakebed.

Lake Thorsø is a long, relatively narrow freshwater lake with average depth of 4.2 metres and maximum depth of 8 metres. The lake has one significant inflow (Jenskær Bæk) and one outflow (Gravbækken). Water retention time in the lake is approximately 156 days. Current flows weakly westward toward the outflow.

Location

Lake Thorsø is located at Virklund approximately 5 kilometres south of Silkeborg, Denmark. Thorsøbadet is accessed from Thorsøvænget in the town centre. Vesterlund is accessed via paths from Vesterlundvej and is a private bathing area used by summer house residents.

Facilities

Thorsøbadet features a bathing platform and laid beach sand. Vesterlund has several private bathing platforms but no laid sand. Warning signs regarding algal blooms are posted when risk exists.

Season

The official bathing season runs from 1 June to 1 September, during which water quality samples are collected.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Classification is determined solely by faecal bacteria content; algae abundance is not included in the classification. No exceedances of bathing water regulations regarding faecal bacteria have occurred in recent years at either bathing location.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms occur annually since 2010, primarily caused by nutrient input from the Vesterlund summer house area. Some blue-green algal species produce toxins that can be fatal in severe cases, though poisoning risk from bathing is rare. Other planktonic algae may bloom, potentially causing high pH and discomfort to swimmers. A small number of unsewered properties discharge inadequately treated wastewater to the lake's inflow. Rare sewage overflow points exist but function infrequently.
