Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Almindsø is a deep lake located between Silkeborg and Virklund in Denmark. It has two designated bathing areas: Østre Søbad in the southeastern corner and Vestre Søbad on the northern part of the eastern shore. Both bathing areas feature sandy beaches and underwater vegetation, with large bathing piers constructed by the municipality. Water depth increases rapidly from the shore, reaching approximately 5 meters at the end of the piers.

Water

Almindsø is a deep lake with very low water exchange. The lake bottom consists predominantly of sand and mud in deeper areas, with underwater vegetation present. Water depth reaches approximately 5 meters at the bathing pier ends. Current speeds are normally very low with no dominant current direction at the bathing areas.

Location

Almindsø is situated between Silkeborg and Virklund, bounded by Horsensvej and Søndre Ringvej. Østre Søbad is accessed from Horsensvej where a small parking area is available, or via paths from Søndre Ringvej. Vestre Søbad is accessed via gravel road and paths from Søndre Ringvej and Horsensvej, with the nearest parking at Søndre Ringvej. The lake is mostly surrounded by forest.

Facilities

Bathing piers at both locations. Sandy beaches at both bathing areas. Parking available at Østre Søbad from Horsensvej and at Vestre Søbad near Søndre Ringvej. Waste disposal bins are installed at bathing sites.

Season

Monitoring season runs from 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. No wastewater discharge outlets exist in the lake. The lake has low nutrient content, reducing the risk of algal blooms.

Risks

Small risk of cyanobacteria blooms in summer due to low nutrient content, though red cyanobacteria blooms may occur in winter in some years. Minimal risk of chemical contamination from vehicle accidents on nearby roads. Potential fecal contamination from swimmers and animals.
