Panizza is a pebble beach located on Lake Maggiore near Ghiffa in the Piedmont region of Italy. The beach has a gentle slope and extends approximately 367 metres. Water sports are permitted in the area. The beach is situated near a residential complex that was formerly known as a hat factory.

Location

Ghiffa, Verbano Cusio Ossola Province, Piedmont region, Italy. The beach is located near the Panizza residence, previously known as a cappellificio (hat factory). Altitude: 263 metres above sea level.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 15.7 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 26.5 MPN/100 ml. Enterococcci 90th percentile: 74.6 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 126.8 MPN/100 ml.

Risks

The bathing water area has medium-high pressure classification due to high density of sewage pipes. Scattered houses near the monitoring zone may not be connected to the sewage network. An unmapped stream enters the lake in the vicinity. Vessels may release mineral oils and/or fuel. Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures and accidental failures of pumping installations, introducing untreated wastewater. Over four years, nine cyanobacterial samples were analysed; none exceeded 20,000 cells/ml. No macroalgae, phytoplankton proliferation, or toxic effects on swimmers or aquatic ecosystems have been detected.
