Bathing water profile document for Étang de Berre beaches in France, updated in 2025. This document establishes risk profiles and management procedures for multiple bathing sites on the lagoon in accordance with the 2006 European Bathing Water Directive. The Étang de Berre watershed includes natural tributaries (Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers) and is served by multiple wastewater treatment plants. Water quality is monitored for intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli using defined methods and sampling rules.

Coastal and transitional water body (Étang de Berre lagoon). Multiple bathing beaches with varying characteristics; Robinsons beach is 679 metres long with an average width of 5 metres and east-southeast orientation. Robinsons beach has sandy and pebbly substrate with average daily attendance of 9 people in 2020.

Location

Étang de Berre lagoon, France. Multiple beaches within the lagoon including Robinsons (Rognac), Champigny, Marettes, Romaniquette, and others. Specific beaches identified in risk profile sections.

Season

Monitoring conducted during summer season (May to September). All bathing waters must achieve minimum sufficient quality by end of 2015 bathing season.

Water Quality

Quality classification based on 4 categories: insufficient, sufficient, good, or excellent. Regulatory thresholds for coastal and transitional waters: Excellent (intestinal enterococci ≤100 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile, E. coli ≤250 UFC/100ml at 95th percentile); Good (enterococci ≤200, E. coli ≤500 at 95th percentile); Sufficient (enterococci ≤185, E. coli ≤500 at 90th percentile). Robinsons beach classified as Excellent in 2024, 2023, 2022, and Good in 2021. Monitoring conducted since 2012; minimum 4 samples per bathing season required.

Risks

Storm events identified as potential pollution source. Nine storm episodes tracked between 2012 and 2025 (rainfall 4.6–45 mm/24h) showed three beaches with increased sensitivity: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette experienced high E. coli contamination following storms. Wastewater treatment plant malfunctions and intense rainfall can cause bacterial contamination. Mean bacterial levels 24 hours after storms: 115 UFC E. coli/100ml and 79 UFC enterococci/100ml. Beach closures of 24 hours recommended following rainfall exceeding 10 mm/24h. Arc river discharge near Champigny beach is identified as contamination source.
