Saint Clair is a natural beach bathing site in the Lavandou commune on the French Mediterranean coast. The water quality at this site was classified as excellent in the 2022 monitoring season according to European directive standards. The beach experiences approximately 700 daily users during peak periods, with most pollution events occurring after heavy rainfall or thunderstorms, though such incidents are rare and brief.

Mediterranean Sea bathing zone. Water temperature reaches a maximum of 26°C in summer.

Location

Located in Le Lavandou, Var, France. A parking area is situated 50 metres from the bathing zone. Numerous restaurants and other infrastructure are located 10 metres from the bathing area.

Water Quality

2022 classification: Excellent (compliant with European directive 2006). The site is subject to regular bacteriological monitoring. Pollution sources include wastewater treatment overflow, stormwater runoff from the Bardigon stream, agricultural runoff, mooring zone activities, and parking surface runoff. Pollutants are predominantly brief (under 72 hours) and occur mainly following heavy rainfall events.

Risks

Overflow from the Saint Clair pumping station during rainfall events or network malfunction poses fecal matter pollution risk. Stormwater runoff from the Bardigon stream carries agricultural chemicals, mineral hydrocarbons, and oils into the bathing zone. Boat mooring in the anchorage zone presents momentary pollution risk from fecal matter and hydrocarbons. Phytoplankton (Ostreopsis, Dinophysis, Prorocentum) proliferation is possible due to organic matter pollution and elevated summer water temperatures. High tourist season traffic increases fecal matter pollution risk.
