Bonporteau is a Type 1 bathing water profile beach located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach has a sand and rock substrate with rocky areas at the extremities containing photophilic algae. Seagrass meadows (Posidonia, a protected species) are present at the beach, indicating good environmental quality. The beach has an abrupt bathymetric profile indicating significant wave exposure and regular water circulation. Summer water temperature averages 22°C with a maximum of 26°C.

Mediterranean Sea bathing area. The seabed comprises sand and rocks. The bathymetric profile is abrupt. Infralittoral rocky areas with photophilic algae are present at the zone extremities. Water temperature in summer: 22°C average, maximum 26°C.

Location

Bonporteau beach is located near Cavalaire-sur-Mer. The Fenouillet stream drains into the bathing area. A relief pumping station is located less than 150 metres from the beach. Road access is via the D559.

Water Quality

The beach is subject to mixed mineral and organic pollution from the Fenouillet stream. High concentrations of suspended solids (MES) due to soil erosion sensitivity. Elevated cadmium and mercury concentrations detected. Eutrophication risk identified with potential phytoplankton proliferation (genera Ostreopsis, Dynophysis, Prorocentrum, Coolia). Phytoplankton occurrence remains low on Bonporteau beach due to wave and wind exposure and bathing zone depth. The stream passes through a former municipal waste landfill, introducing micropollutants from leachate. Preventive beach closure measures have been active since 2005 for storm alerts.

Risks

Cyanobacteria and blue-green colorations possible under certain conditions. Eutrophication of the water body. Brown foam and mucilaginous substances on rocks. Elevated summer water temperatures (26°C maximum). Presence of infralittoral rocks with algae as potential phytoplankton proliferation sources. Mixed sewage and stormwater overflow risks from the Fenouillet stream during heavy rainfall. Potential hydrocarbons and heavy metals from road runoff via the D559. Possible contamination from the artisanal zone (APPIA) with hydrocarbons. Septic tanks may pose pollution risk if poorly maintained.
