The bathing zone is a coastal marine water body in the Cantabrian Sea, part of the Cantábrico hydrographic demarcation. Chlorophyll-a concentration at the Mataleñas coastal water station is approximately 2.8 µg/l.

Mataleñas is located in Santander, Cantabria. Access is easy on foot. The nearest road is S-20. Urban bus transport is available. Parking is available with 50 spaces. The nearest hospital is Valdecilla in Santander, 5 kilometres away.

Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is very low, below 5,000,000 cells/l. One relief overflow discharge point is recorded at coordinates UTM 436525, 4814773.
