Cala Margarida is a small cove beach located in Palamós, Girona, within the Santa Maria de la Fosca urbanization. The beach is enclosed, approximately 100 meters long with an average width of 10 meters and a surface area of 226 square meters. It is oriented south and experiences moderate summer occupancy. The cove is bounded to the east by cliffs that extend to Platja de la Fosca and to the west by smaller cliffs leading to Cala del Morro de Vedell.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The water body belongs to mass C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as deep rocky type with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.9 to 38.5 psu. Water temperatures average 20.5°C in June, 23.7°C in July, 23.8°C in August, and 22.5°C in September. The cove receives no natural water course inputs. Sea state is predominantly rippled with weak northwest winds.

Location

Palamós, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The cove is situated within the Santa Maria de la Fosca urbanization, approximately 200 meters southwest of Palamós marina. Coordinates in UTM Eu50 system are available for the monitoring point.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly (every Saturday) for 17 consecutive weeks during this period. Environmental inspections are conducted a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

The bathing water is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspections for water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional monitoring assesses sand condition and beach access. The Catalan Water Agency conducts the Beach and Coastal Water Quality Monitoring Plan during the bathing season.

Risks

The area is subject to phytoplankton bloom monitoring. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances may occasionally be detected, requiring toxicity control analysis. Jellyfish presence is monitored as part of environmental inspections.
