Platja Gran de Palamós is a semi-enclosed urban beach located in the municipality of Palamós in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach stretches for 990 metres with an average width of 55 metres and covers an area of 48,650 square metres. It is bounded to the southeast by the port of Palamós and continues northwest into the beach of es Monestrí. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and is situated within the Mediterranean Sea.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type: rocky deep water with low continental influence (C14 Begur-Blanes mass). Average water temperature: June 20.8°C, July 23.7°C, August 23.9°C, September 22.6°C. Mean salinity range 37.0–38.7 psu. Significant wave height 0.87 metres with mean period 5.55 seconds and most frequent direction NNE. Weak southerly winds predominant. Seabed substrate: very coarse sand (D50 = 1.5 mm). Very steep water entry slope. Coastal line evolution: −0.21 metres per year.

Location

Palamós municipality (17,766 inhabitants) in Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located within the urban area of Palamós town, bordered by the port to the southeast and extending toward es Monestrí beach to the northwest.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly microbiological sampling conducted every Saturday. Environmental inspections minimum 3 times weekly. Water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence are assessed. Additional analytical controls conducted in cases of temporary affections or incidents until water quality is restored.

Risks

Riera Aubi watercourse located approximately 250 metres to the southwest at es Monestrí beach; discharges to sea only during heavy rainfall. High hydrological response index in coastal zone. Phytoplankton proliferations monitored during bathing season as a natural phenomenon that can occur frequently in summer; most cases form only discolored patches without risk to swimmers; toxic species trigger management protocols. Jellyfish presence assessed during environmental inspections.
