Canyelles Petites is a semi-urban beach in Roses municipality, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province. The beach is enclosed by rocky outcrops at its northern and southern ends and experiences high occupancy during summer. It measures 251 meters in length with an average width of 23 meters and a surface area of 5,843 square meters, consisting of medium sand with a grain size (D50) of 0.39 millimeters.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Average water temperatures: June 20.1°C, July 22.7°C, August 22.3°C, September 20.9°C. Salinity range 36.8–38.5 psu. Significant wave height 0.61 meters with mean period 5.82 seconds. Predominant wind direction east-weak. Predominant sea state flat. The mass of water (C6 Canyelles) is classified as rocky deep type with low continental influence. The only natural watercourse is the channeled Rec de Canyelles, which discharges only during heavy rainfall.

Location

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks, with microbiological sampling weekly (Saturdays) and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality controlled by Agència Catalana de l'Aigua under Directive 2006/7/CE. Weekly microbiological analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly water samples collected and analyzed. Environmental control includes visual inspection of water parameters: transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial vegetation debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring program in place to detect toxic algal blooms. Contaminated water discharge from Roses wastewater treatment system (EDAR) with biological treatment capacity of 25,000 m³/day, discharged via submarine emissary at Roses beach 1,532 meters away. Risk detection and management protocols established for phytoplankton toxic species.
