Playa Castillo de San Gabriel (El Castillo) is a coastal bathing beach located in Arrecife, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 105 metres long and 10 metres wide, with fine white sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with tidal ranges of 1–3 metres and bathymetry between 0 and –6 metres. The bathing zone is situated in the east Lanzarote coastal water body, which is classified in good ecological status.

Coastal salt water body ES70LZTIV (East Lanzarote/Natural coastal surface water). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to –6 metres. Fine white sand substrate. Exposed to moderate wave conditions. Tidal range is 1–3 metres. Regular current regime.

Location

The beach is located in Arrecife, Lanzarote, in the province of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. Pedestrian access is good. Vehicle access is good. A promenade is available. Disabled access is provided. No parking is available.

Facilities

Bars are available. Waste bins are provided. No public water distribution network connection. No showers. No foot washing facilities. No public services. No changing rooms. No lifeguards. No first aid services. No doctor on site.

1 February to 30 November

Water Quality

Water quality is evaluated based on faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci measured over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical). A diffuse contamination episode occurred from 2–28 March 2011 (microbiological contamination). Monitoring conducted from 1 February to 30 November.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: Puerto Los Mármoles, Arrecife. Point pollution sources include: Casino wastewater treatment facility (EBAR Casino); submarine outfall from Arrecife wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Arrecife); wastewater treatment facilities EBAR Puntilla, EBAR Barquillo, EBAR Alcorde. Contamination risks from stormwater runoff, raw or treated urban wastewater (pipe breakages, network failures, emergency overflows, unauthorised discharges), and accidental hydrocarbon spills. Cyanobacterium Trichodesmium proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
