Sant Gervasi is a sandy beach located in a semi-urban setting within Vilanova i la Geltrú municipality in Barcelona province, Catalonia. The beach is 240 meters long with an average width of 30 meters and a surface area of 7,200 square meters. It is bounded to the north by the Punta de Sant Gervasi breakwater and to the south by another breakwater, with rocky areas further south near Punta de Santa Llúcia. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy beach with fine sand sediment (D50 = 0.18 mm). Average beach width 30 meters, length 240 meters, surface area 7,200 square meters. Moderate water entry gradient. Average water temperatures: June 22.2°C, July 25.8°C, August 26.1°C, September 25.0°C. Salinity range 37.2–38.7 psu. Significant wave height 0.74 meters with average period of 6 seconds. Predominantly light southwest winds with rippled sea state. Low continental influence.

Location

Vilanova i la Geltrú municipality in the Garraf comarca, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast facing south-southeast.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections conducted a minimum of 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control tests Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. No freshwater discharge points are located near the bathing zone.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season; these are natural phenomena that may occur frequently in summer and typically form only colored patches without risk to swimmers. The beach has high summer occupancy.
