Platja d'Aiguadolç is a semi-urban beach located in Sitges, Barcelona, within the Garraf comarca of Catalonia. The beach is enclosed by a small cliff at its northern end and a breakwater at its southern end, which separates it from Platja dels Balmins. It experiences high occupancy levels during summer months. The beach has fine sand sediment and a gentle water entry slope, with a surface area of 4,840 m².

Mediterranean coastal water body. Beach length: 160 m. Average width: 26 m. Surface area: 4,840 m². Fine sand sediment (D50 = 0.15 mm). Water entry slope: gentle. Coastline evolution: -0.5 m/year. Salinity range: 37.2–38.5 psu. Average water temperatures: June 21.3 °C, July 24.8 °C, August 25.7 °C, September 24.4 °C. Significant wave height: 0.74 m. Average wave period: 6 seconds. Most frequent wave direction: SSW. Predominant sea state: slight chop. Prevailing wind: northwest, weak intensity.

Location

Sitges, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Within the municipality of Sitges (population 27,668). The beach is bounded to the north by a small cliff and to the south by the breakwater of Port d'Aiguadolç.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly (every Saturday) over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspection minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control tests Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental inspection evaluates water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Torrent d'Aiguadolç provides occasional freshwater input during rainfall. The beach belongs to water mass C23 (Sitges), classified as sandy shallow coastal water with low continental influence. The area has a high hydrological response velocity index.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring program detects and controls harmful algal blooms. These blooms are natural phenomena potentially frequent in summer and are monitored continuously during the bathing season. Emergency discharge outlet (Emissari d'Aiguadolç) at the beach can only be activated in case of wastewater treatment plant failures.
