Sant Sebastià beach is located in the urban municipality of Sitges in Barcelona, Spain, within the Garraf comarca. The beach is well-defined with limits at Punta de la Llengua de Serp to the north and Punta de la Torreta to the south. It measures 210 metres in length with an average width of 24 metres and a surface area of 5,420 square metres. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Average water temperature: June 21.1°C, July 24.9°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.3°C. Salinity range 37.4–38.5 psu. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with average period of 6 seconds. Most frequent wave direction SSW. Sediment medium grain size (D50 = 0.3 mm). Water entry slope moderate. Coastal evolution rate 0.4 metres per year.

Location

Sitges municipality, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded by Punta de la Llengua de Serp to the north and Punta de la Torreta to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested weekly are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections include assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The beach is subject to a phytoplankton monitoring programme to detect and control proliferations of microscopic algae species that may pose risks to human health. Most phytoplankton blooms form only coloured patches in the water and pose no risk to swimmers. In cases of toxic species detection, management and information protocols are activated.
