Platja de la Ribera is a sandy beach located in the urban municipality of Sitges in Catalonia, Spain, within the Garraf region. The beach is 275 meters long with an average width of 29 meters and covers 7,626 square meters, with fine sand sediment. It is bounded by breakwaters at both ends and experiences high occupancy levels during summer. The beach has a very steep water entry and shows coastal erosion of 1.4 meters per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Type: sandy, shallow beach with low continental influence. Water body mass C23. Significant wave height 0.74 meters with average period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. Mean water temperature ranges from 21.1°C in June to 25.7°C in August, with average September temperature of 24.3°C. Mean salinity 37.3–38.3 psu. Dominant sea state: rippled. Predominant weak SE wind. General circulation follows cyclonic pattern with a coastal parallel current and northeast current off the Balearic Islands.

Location

Sitges municipality, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast and is part of the urban area of Sitges, which has 27,668 inhabitants. For more information on facilities and services, consult the Sitges municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological analysis and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) are analyzed weekly. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, coloration, suspended human-origin solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing water is served by the Sitges-Sant Pere de Ribes wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and phosphorus removal. Wastewater is discharged to sea through submarine emissaries.

Risks

The beach is located in a coastal zone with high hydrological response velocity index. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted to detect toxic algae species that may pose health risks. There are no permanent freshwater discharge points that discharge into the bathing zone under rainfall conditions.
