Platja dels Balmins is a semi-urban beach located in Sitges, Barcelona, within the Garraf region on the Mediterranean coast. The beach measures 220 metres in length with an average width of 15 metres and a total surface area of 2,760 square metres. It is bounded to the north by the breakwater of Port d'Aiguadolç and to the south by a cliff formation. The beach has high summer occupancy and fine sand with a moderate slope.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Average water temperature ranges from 21.3°C in June to 26.0°C in August. Salinity ranges from 37.3 to 38.6 practical salinity units. Predominant wave height is 0.74 metres with an average period of 6 seconds. Continental influence is low. Prevailing winds are northwest and weak. General sea conditions are typically choppy.

Location

Sitges, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is part of Sitges municipality, which has 27,668 inhabitants. It is situated in a semi-urban residential setting.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological tests on Saturdays and a minimum of 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control tests for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci are conducted weekly during the bathing season. Environmental monitoring includes assessments of water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Sitges-Sant Pere de Ribes wastewater treatment system, which provides secondary biological treatment with phosphorus removal, discharging through submarine outfalls.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season as a precautionary measure. Most proliferations produce only coloured patches in the water and pose no risk to swimmers. The Catalan Water Agency has protocols in place to manage and inform the public if toxic algae species are detected.
