Platja de Canet is a semi-urban beach located in Canet de Mar, a municipality in the Maresme comarca of Barcelona province, Catalonia. The beach is 1,575 meters long with an average width of 60 meters and covers an area of 95,926 square meters. It has very coarse sediment and a steep water entry gradient. The beach is bordered by a small cliff to the north and a breakwater to the south, separating it from neighboring beaches.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass C16 (Pineda de Mar-Mataró sandy shallow water with low continental influence). Average salinity 36.9–38.5 psu. Water temperature in June 20.1°C, July 25.5°C, August 23.9°C, September 22.9°C. Significant wave height 0.69 meters, average period 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Prevailing wind direction SE, weak intensity. Predominant sea state flat. High hydrological response velocity index. Primary freshwater inputs from Riera de la Torre and Riera de Sant Domènech during rainfall.

Location

Canet de Mar, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 14,255 inhabitants and is located on the Mediterranean coast in the Maresme comarca.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring conducted with a minimum of 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Potential phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during bathing season. These are typically natural phenomena occurring frequently in summer and usually only form colored patches without risk to swimmers. Toxic species may occasionally occur and trigger management and public information protocols.
