Cavaió Beach is located in the municipality of Canet de Mar in the Maresme county, Barcelona province, Catalonia. The beach is an open coastal area situated in an urban setting with a south-southeast orientation. It is bounded to the north by a breakwater separating it from Canet Beach and to the south by the Rial de la Vall de Maria, separating it from Cavaió d'Arenys Beach. Summer occupancy levels at the beach are low.

Water

The bathing area belongs to water mass C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró, classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 37.0 to 38.4 practical salinity units. Water temperatures average 20.1°C in June, 23.4°C in July, 24.0°C in August, and 22.8°C in September. General circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with coastal currents and a northeast current toward the Balearic Islands. Predominant winds are weak easterlies with predominant rippled sea conditions.

Location

Cavaió Beach is located in Canet de Mar, a municipality with 14,255 inhabitants in the Maresme county, Barcelona province, Catalonia. Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The monitoring program has been certified under UNE-EN ISO-9001:2000.

Risks

The area experiences high hydrological response velocity to rainfall events. The Torre and Sant Domènech streams constitute the main freshwater discharge that occasionally enters the bathing area during rainfall conditions. A phytoplankton monitoring program is in place to detect and control potentially harmful algal blooms, which are monitored continuously during the bathing season.
