Platja del Cavaió is a sandy beach located in the municipality of Arenys de Mar in the Maresme county, Barcelona, within a predominantly urban residential environment. The beach stretches approximately 1 kilometre in length with an average width of 82 metres and a surface area of 126,120 square metres. It is bounded on the north-east by the Rial de la Vall de Maria stream and on the south-west by the Port of Arenys. The beach experiences high summer occupancy.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type: sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average salinity range 37.0–38.5 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.7°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.4°C, September 24.0°C. Predominant sea state is rippled. Significant wave height 0.69 metres, mean period 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. High hydrological response index. Sediment very coarse (D50 = 1.81 mm). Strong water entry gradient. Coastline evolution: -7 metres per year.

Location

Arenys de Mar municipality, Maresme county, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast between the Rial de la Vall de Maria to the north-east and the Port of Arenys to the south-west.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring comprises a minimum of 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes weekly sampling and visual inspection of water parameters: transparency, colour, human-derived floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to Water Body C16 (Pineda de Mar–Mataró), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence.

Risks

Rial de la Vall de Maria is the main source of freshwater discharge to the bathing zone, occurring intermittently during rainfall. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted during the bathing season to detect potentially toxic algal species. Hydrocarbon presence is monitored and investigated when detected.
