Platja de Coco is an open beach located in the highly urbanized and industrial municipality of Badalona within the Barcelona province of Catalonia, Spain. The beach has an average width of 60 metres, a length of 1,005 metres, and a total surface area of 60,300 square metres. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months and is bordered by the Sant Ignasi stream to the northeast and the Port of Badalona to the southwest. The sediment is coarse with a median grain size of 0.92 mm, and the beach has a gentle slope for water entry.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal beach. Average water temperature: June 21.4°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.2°C, September 23.6°C. Mean salinity range: 36.9–38.5 psu. Predominant sea state is rippled. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with mean period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. General circulation is cyclonic with currents parallel to the continental coast.

Location

Badalona, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in an urban setting with proximity to the Port of Badalona and the mouth of the Besòs river.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency. Microbiological quality is determined using Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci as contamination indicators. Temporary quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), or Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Annual classifications are based on analytical data from the last four years and include categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient.

Risks

The beach is located in a zone with high hydrological response velocity index to rainfall episodes. Primary freshwater inputs during rainfall conditions come from the Canyet, Sant Ignasi, and Ponent streams. The Besòs wastewater treatment system serves the area with a principal submarine outfall located at the Parc Nord-Est beach in Sant Adrià, and an emergency outfall 200 metres to the south that can be activated during torrential rainfall.
