Playa de Deba, also known as Playa de Santiago, is a sandy beach located in the Deba transition water body east of the breakwater separating it from the Deba River estuary. The beach is 400 meters long with an average width of 120 meters and a mean surface area of 53,980 square meters. It is composed of fine sand and is designated as a high-occupancy, heavily-used urban beach with strong wave exposure. During the 2010 swimming season, approximately 287,873 swimmers visited the beach.

Water

The beach is situated in the Deba transition water body. The beach has a length of 400 meters, average width of 120 meters, low tide surface area of 80,012 square meters, and high tide surface area of 27,948 square meters. Tidal range is 4.80 meters with a minimum tide of 1 meter. Wave action is strong. Water renewal is estimated at 7 days or less. The beach is composed of fine sand.

Location

The beach is located in the municipality of Deba in the province of Gipuzkoa, Spain. It has good vehicle and pedestrian access, marked by ramps and stairs. Urban parking areas are available adjacent to the beach.

Facilities

Lifeguards (9), surveillance tower, first aid kits (2), rescue boat, ambulance. Public services include changing cabins with vestibules, toilets (6), wash basins (8), and showers (15). Beach-based facilities include showers (16) and foot-wash stations (11). Disabled access facilities: access ramps, rigid sand pathways (5), changing cabins/vestibules, toilets (3), assisted bathing (amphibious chair), and showers. Additional facilities include waste bins (36) and containers, information panels, public address system, sports area, support areas with benches and fountains, umbrella/chair rentals, kayak rentals, urban parking area, seafront promenade, webcam, public telephone, and bar/cafeteria. Children's lost wristbands are available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008-2010 was EXCELLENT according to Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Microbiological monitoring at the sampling point showed no instances of INSUFFICIENT classification. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations remained below the sufficiency thresholds of 500 NMP/100 ml and 185 NMP/100 ml respectively during the monitoring period. The beach holds ISO 14001 environmental management certification since 2003.

Risks

The Deba River is the principal pollution source affecting the beach. Although the Deba wastewater treatment plant treats urban effluent from the right margin of the estuary, buildings on the left margin in Mutriku municipality remain unconnected. A small sports marina with capacity for 70 moored vessels between the estuary mouth and the Deba bridge may constitute an additional pollution source.
