Mutriku Beach is located in the municipality of Mutriku in Gipuzkoa, Spain, within the port area. Due to ongoing port expansion works, the bathing profile focuses on an artificial saltwater pool adjacent to the beach in the port zone. The pool measures 48 metres in length, 30 metres in width, and covers 1,440 square metres. It is protected by a breakwater and accessed via the port pier. The beach is managed by the Mutriku Town Council in coordination with the Environmental Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Government.

Water

Artificial saltwater pool in the Matxitxako-Getaria coastal water body. Length: 48 metres. Width: 30 metres. Surface area: 1,440 square metres. Astronomical tide amplitude: 4.80 metres. Minimum tide: 1 metre. Calm waters. Water renewal period: 7 days or less.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008 was SUFFICIENT. Classification for 2009 and 2010 was GOOD according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring showed that in 10% of cases over the last 3 bathing seasons, classification would be INSUFFICIENT when compared to limit values (500 NMP/100 ml for E. coli and 185 NMP/100 ml for intestinal enterococci). The periplanar area was rated BAD in 2008 and 2009, and IMPROVABLE in 2010. The surrounding Matxitxako-Getaria water body has a GOOD ecological status and complies with chemical status as of 2009.

Risks

The main pollution source is treated effluent discharge from the Mutriku wastewater treatment plant (Zabalera), located approximately 250 metres offshore. Secondary treatment removes over 80% of BOD and total nitrogen. Port expansion works are an additional potential contamination source. Occasional oil, fuel spills, and cleaning residues from port operations are possible.
