Mutriku (Ondar Gain) is a beach located in the municipality of Mutriku in Gipuzkoa, Spain. The beach reopened to the public in July 2011 following construction of the outer breakwater of Mutriku port. It features a seawater pool and is an urban, well-equipped bathing area. The beach is 180 metres long and 30 metres wide, composed of sand and exposed to strong wave action. The beach is managed jointly by the Mutriku Town Council and the Department of Environment and Hydraulic Works of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.

Water

Coastal water body in the Matxitxako-Getaria water mass. The beach is 180 metres long and 30 metres wide. Maximum tidal range is 4.80 metres and minimum is 1 metre. Water renewal occurs within 7 days or less. The beach is exposed to strong wave action but has a low degree of exposure to wave energy due to high protection from dominant marine currents.

Location

Located in the municipality of Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country, Spain. The beach has paved and pedestrian access and urban parking facilities.

Facilities

Lifeguards, ambulance, first aid kit, lifeguard station, accessible entrances, accessible cabins, accessible toilets, toilets, water fountain, shower cabins, showers, foot-rinse stations, information panels, public address system, waste bins and containers, urban parking area, bar, cafeteria. Domestic animals are prohibited during bathing season.

Season

Monitoring conducted during bathing seasons 2012-2015. The beach was reopened to the public in July 2011.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent for 2012-2015 according to Directive 2006/7/CE based on microbiological variables (E. coli and intestinal enterococci). The coastal water mass Matxitxako-Getaria achieved Good status for Ecological State, Chemical State, and Overall Status in 2014. Treated wastewater from the Mutriku wastewater treatment plant (operational since 2005) is discharged approximately 250 metres offshore at the port and is not expected to affect the beach.

Risks

Probable presence of benthic microalgae with toxic capacity (genera Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum, and Coolia), though at very low concentrations (20-100 cells per litre). No records of swimmer impacts from these organisms. Potentially toxic phytoplankton species Karenia cf. mikimotoi was observed in summer 2012 at very low concentration.
