Ondarbeltz is an urban beach located in the municipality of Mutriku in Gipuzkoa, Spain, at the mouth of the Deba river. The beach has a mean length of 120 metres, mean width of 83 metres, and mean surface area of 9,960 square metres. It features fine sand composition and is situated close to the urban centre of Deba and 3 kilometres from the centre of Mutriku. The beach offers essential services and vehicle access, with parking and recreational areas installed following urban and landscape improvement works.

Water

Transitional water body in the Deba estuary at the river mouth. Mean length 120 metres, mean width 83 metres, mean surface area 9,960 square metres. Composed of fine sand. Tidal range (amplitude) 4.80 metres with minimum tide of 1 metre. Water renewal time equal to or less than 7 days. Classified as calm waters with low wave exposure.

Location

Located in the municipality of Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, near the urban centre of Deba and 3 kilometres from the centre of Mutriku. The beach is accessible by vehicle with stairs and ramps. Parking and recreational areas are available.

Facilities

Lifeguards, ambulance, first aid kit, medical equipment on call, lost child wristbands, public toilets, washbasins, showers, drinking fountain, disabled access ramps, information panels, waste bins and containers, children's play areas, parking, kiosk, bar and restaurant.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent in 2008, Good in 2009 and 2010 according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Nine percent of samples exceeded sufficient quality thresholds (500 NMP/100 ml for E. coli and 185 NMP/100 ml for intestinal enterococci). The Deba river is the principal pollution source. Secondary treatment wastewater from the Deba wastewater treatment plant is discharged approximately 2 kilometres east of the river mouth with more than 80% BOD removal.

Risks

The Deba river is the main pollution source. During flood episodes, river discharge can increase more than one order of magnitude above average values. A small sports marina with capacity for 70 moored vessels is located between the river mouth and the Deba bridge and may represent a pollution source. Buildings on the left margin of the estuary in Mutriku municipality are not connected to the wastewater treatment plant.
