Platja de Garbí is an open beach located in the urban municipality of Calella in the Maresme comarca of Barcelona, Spain. The beach measures 752 metres in length with an average width of 72 metres and covers a surface area of 59,434 square metres. It is bounded to the north by the Riera de Capaspre stream, which separates it from Platja Gran, and to the south by a natural rocky formation where the Calella Lighthouse stands, separating it from Platja de les Roques. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal beach. Average water temperature: June 20.2°C, July 23.5°C, August 23.9°C, September 23.1°C. Mean salinity range: 36.8–38.4 psu. Sediment is very coarse with a median grain size (D50) of 0.1–0.82 mm. Strong water entry gradient. Coastline evolution: 0.9 m per year. Significant wave height 0.69 m with mean period of 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state: rippled. Dominant winds are weak from the south. The beach is located in a coastal zone with a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index. The Riera de Capaspre and Rierany de Valldengli are the main sources of freshwater discharge during rainfall.

Location

Calella, Barcelona, Spain. The beach is situated within the urban area of Calella municipality, which has 18,627 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly on Saturdays. Environmental inspections conducted a minimum of three times weekly during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly sampling and analysis are conducted during the bathing season. Environmental inspections evaluate water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place to detect and control blooms of microscopic algae species that may pose health risks. The beach is subject to natural phytoplankton blooms which can be frequent during summer.
