Platja del Poblenou-la Riera is a bathing beach in Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, situated in an urban environment. The beach is 1,200 metres long with an average width of 50 metres and covers 59,650 square metres. It is bounded to the north by the Riera de Pineda and to the south by the Rierany dels Frares. The beach experiences high occupancy levels during summer months.

Water

Open sandy beach bordering the Mediterranean Sea (water mass C16: sandy shallow waters with low continental influence). Average salinity ranges from 37.3 to 38.3 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.2°C, July 23.2°C, August 24.2°C, September 23.8°C. Predominant sea state is slight. The beach has a high Hydrological Response Rate index. Principal freshwater inputs include the Riera de Pineda, Rierany dels Frares, and torrents del l'Horta and del Correu, which discharge water only during rainfall.

Location

Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in an urban area within the municipality of Pineda de Mar, which has 26,203 inhabitants. It is bordered to the north by the Riera de Pineda, separating it from Platja dels Pescadors, and to the south by the Rierany dels Frares, marking the boundary between Pineda de Mar and Calella.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring is conducted for 17 consecutive weeks: microbiological testing weekly on Saturdays; environmental inspections at least 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored during the bathing season by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes at least 3 weekly inspections evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional analytic controls are performed during temporary incidents.

Risks

The beach is located in an area with freshwater discharge points from the Riera de Pineda, Rierany dels Frares, Torrent de l'Horta, and Torrent del Correu, which may affect water quality during rainfall. The Maresme Nord wastewater treatment system includes an emergency discharge point (Torrent del Correu outfall at 450 metres) that can be activated during network overload or main outfall failure.
