Platja Gran de Calella is an open beach located in an urban setting within the municipality of Calella in Maresme, Barcelona. The beach has an average width of 60 metres, a length of 1,388 metres, and a total surface area of 99,788 square metres. The sediment is very coarse with a median grain size of 1.76 mm, and the beach has a steep water entry gradient. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Mediterranean Sea. Water body classification: C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró, sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Average salinity range: 37.2–38.5 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.2 °C, July 23.5 °C, August 23.9 °C, September 23.2 °C. Dominant sea state: calm. Significant wave height: 0.69 metres, mean period: 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction: SSW. Predominant wind direction and intensity: S-weak. Coastal circulation is cyclonic with currents parallel to the continental coast and north-eastward currents off the Balearic Islands.

Location

Calella, Maresme county, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered to the north-east by the Rierany dels Frares and to the south-west by the Riera de Capaspre. Water Quality

Water quality is controlled by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). Bathing season monitoring period: 17 consecutive weeks from the first week of June to the third week of September. Microbiological testing occurs weekly on Saturdays, checking for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections are conducted at least 3 times weekly, assessing water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Maresme Nord wastewater system serves the municipality, featuring a biological treatment plant (EDAR) at Platja dels Pins in Pineda de Mar with 4 submarine outfalls.

Risks

The beach is located in a coastal zone with high hydrological response velocity (VRH) index. The Riera de Capaspre and Rierany dels Frares are the main sources of freshwater discharge near the bathing zone during rainy conditions. Emergency outfall systems are in place at the beaches of Pescadors, Poblenou-la Riera, and Platja Gran de Calella for network overload situations. Monitoring programmes exist for phytoplankton proliferation and prevention of marine litter.
