Platja de l'Aluet is a narrow, elongated bar-shaped beach in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona, situated in a natural environment. The beach measures 500 meters long with an average width of 15 meters and a total surface area of 19,000 square meters. It is separated from Platja del Trabucador by a small dune area. Summer occupancy at the beach is low.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Located in Alfacs Bay (T3 water mass), which has high continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 21.1 to 37.8 psu. Water temperature: June 24.7°C, July 27.7°C, August 25.9°C, September 23.4°C. Significant wave height averages 81 centimeters with a mean period of 5.24 seconds. Predominant current direction is east with weak intensity. Predominant sea state is rippled.

Location

Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The Montsià region. Parking is available at the beach access point. The beach extends 1.1 kilometers from the parking area.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly during the 17-week monitoring period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE standards. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections assess water transparency, coloration, floating debris, marine vegetation, algae blooms, and hydrocarbons. The beach receives treated wastewater from Sant Carles de la Ràpita's treatment plant, which provides biological treatment with nitrogen removal and tertiary treatment. Treated effluent is discharged directly to Alfacs Bay.

Risks

No permanent water courses discharge to the beach. Variable seasonal canals from rice field areas discharge into Alfacs Bay. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted continuously during the bathing season; most blooms form colored patches without risk to swimmers, but protocols exist for detecting toxic species.
