Platja de l'Astillero is an open beach located in the semi-urban municipality of Malgrat de Mar in Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach stretches 1000 meters in length with an average width of 40 meters and a total surface area of 45,587 square meters. It features very coarse sand sediment with a steep water entry gradient and experiences high occupancy during summer months. The beach is bounded to the northeast by the Riera de Sant Genís de Palafolls and opens toward the Santa Susanna beach to the southwest.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. The beach belongs to water mass C15 (Blanes-Pineda de Mar), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.8 to 38.7 practical salinity units. Mean water temperature: June 20.2°C, July 23.6°C, August 23.9°C, September 23.1°C. Significant wave height 0.69 meters with mean period of 6.2 seconds. General circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with currents parallel to the continental coast and toward the northeast.

Location

Malgrat de Mar municipality, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the Maresme region and adjoins the Riera de Sant Genís de Palafolls to its northeast, with the municipal boundary with Santa Susanna approximately at the Horizó apartments.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks during this period, with microbiological analysis weekly and environmental inspection minimum three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is controlled and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections assess water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Riera de Sant Genís de Palafolls is the principal freshwater input during rainfall events.

The Riera de Sant Genís de Palafolls constitutes the main freshwater input during rainfall events, which can affect water quality. The area is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferations that may pose health risks.
