Platja de Llevant-les Caletes is an open beach located in the semi-urban (tourist) municipality of Santa Susanna in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The beach stretches 1,050 meters in length with an average width of 30 meters and a total surface area of 31,500 square meters. It features very coarse sediment and a steep water entry slope, oriented towards the south-southeast. The beach has high summer occupancy and is bounded to the north by Malgrat de Mar and to the south by the Riera de Santa Susanna.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Beach: 1,050 meters long, 30 meters average width, 31,500 square meters surface area. Very coarse sediment (D50 = 1.05 mm). Steep water entry slope. Water mass C15 (Blanes-Pineda de Mar): shallow sandy type with low continental influence. Mean salinity: 36.7–38.3 psu. Average water temperature: June 20.4°C, July 23.6°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.2°C. Predominant sea state: slight ripple. Significant wave height 0.69 m, mean period 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Moderate level of continental influence.

Location

Santa Susanna, Maresme comarca, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 3,381 inhabitants. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast in a semi-urban setting with hotels along the northern section.

Season

June to September (annual monitoring and classification cycle).

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) during the bathing season (June to September) through fortnightly inspections and microbiological analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Quality is classified into three temporary categories during the season: Excellent, Good (both suitable for bathing), and Insufficient (unsuitable). Annual classifications after the season are: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient. The monitoring network covers approximately 250 bathing zones distributed across Girona, Barcelona, and Tarragona coastal demarcations.

Risks

The Riera de Santa Susanna constitutes the main freshwater input that occasionally discharges into the bathing zone during rainfall. High hydrological response velocity index (VRH) exists in the coastal area. Coastal erosion rate: -1.8 m per year. Four emergency discharge outlets (emissaris d'emergència) from the Alt Maresme wastewater treatment system are located at nearby beaches and can be activated in cases of network overload or main emissary failure.
