Platja de les Dunes is an open beach located in Santa Susanna in the Maresme comarca of Barcelona, Catalonia. The beach covers 60,000 m² with an average width of 50 m and extends for 1,200 m along a semi-urban and agricultural setting. It has a steep water entry gradient and coarse sediment (D50 = 1.05 mm). The beach experiences high summer occupancy and is bordered by the Riera de Santa Susanna to the north.

Location

Santa Susanna, Maresme comarca, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast in a semi-urban setting within the municipality of Santa Susanna (3,381 inhabitants). It adjoins the Riera de Santa Susanna to the north and Platja dels Pins to the south.

June to September (official bathing water monitoring season).

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring includes microbiological quality analysis using fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci). Classification categories are Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), Sufficient, and Insufficient (unsuitable for bathing). The beach has no specific pollution sources mentioned in the profile. Wastewater treatment: the municipality of Santa Susanna is connected to the Alt Maresme system with a biological treatment plant and primary outfall located at Platja dels Pins in Pineda de Mar.

Risks

The Riera de Santa Susanna constitutes the main source of fresh water input to the bathing zone, occurring sporadically during rainfall conditions. The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity (VRH) index during rainfall episodes. Coastal erosion: the shoreline evolution rate is −1.8 m/year.
