Platja del Migjorn is an open beach located in Sant Jaume d'Enveja municipality within the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta. The beach spans 2,700 metres in length with an average width of 61 metres and a surface area of 26,438 square metres. It features fine sand sediment with a moderate water entry slope and is oriented southeast. The beach has low summer occupancy and is bordered by the Alfacada lagoon canal on the right and the Gola de Migjorn mouth on the left, with proximity to the Ebro River estuary and the Deltebre fishing port.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Bathing zone belongs to water masses C33 (Delta Nord) and C34 (Delta Sud). Salinity range 8.1–38.2 psu. Average water temperature: June 22.2°C, July 25.9°C, August 26.1°C, September 24.6°C. Significant wave height 81 cm, average period 5.24 seconds. Prevailing state: rippled. Dominant winds: northeast, light intensity. Coastal circulation is cyclonic with parallel currents and northeastward currents. Continental influence: elevated. Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH): low.

Sant Jaume d'Enveja municipality, Tarragona province, Montsià region, Catalonia, Spain. Located in the Ebro Delta Natural Park with Mediterranean Sea access.

First week of June to third week of September.

Water Quality

Water quality controlled by Agència Catalana de l'Aigua (ACA). Microbiological monitoring weekly (Saturdays). Environmental monitoring minimum 3 times per week. Monitoring period: first week of June to third week of September (17 consecutive weeks). Compliance with European Directive 2006/7/CE for bathing water quality management. Indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Untreated wastewater from Sant Jaume d'Enveja currently discharged to Ebro River; new treatment facility under construction.

Risks

Gola de Migjorn watercourse discharges during heavy rainfall events. Environmental monitoring includes surveillance for floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in operation since 2000 to detect potentially toxic algae species.
