Playa de la Calalga is a closed cove beach located in Calpe, Alicante, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has a length of 140.5 meters at high tide and an average width of 4.7 meters, composed of rocks and sand with a cliff-type coastline. It has no coastal defenses or promenade and is bordered to the north by Playa de Les Bassetes and to the south by Playa de La Fossa. The beach experiences a micromareal tidal range and currents flowing from south to north.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. The beach water mass status is classified as very good under the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/CE. Monitoring sampling point established since 1990. No direct coastal discharges affecting beach water quality. No direct sewage connections or natural geographical accidents that would cause anomalous water quality variations during heavy rainfall.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risk factors evaluated as low frequency with mild impact: rainfall (low frequency, mild impact), urban sewage systems (low frequency, mild impact), coastal discharges (low frequency, mild impact), rivers/channels (low frequency, mild impact), industrial installations (low frequency, mild impact), port installations (low frequency, mild impact), diffuse pollution (low frequency, mild impact). Cyanobacteria proliferations are not typical in coastal waters and no episodes have been detected in the Valencian Community coastline. Jellyfish proliferations are a natural phenomenon that can occur associated with coast geomorphology, climatic situations, and high water temperatures.
