Platja dels Pins is an open beach located in Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, within a semi-urban setting. The beach measures 550 metres in length with an average width of 60 metres and a total surface area of 55,800 square metres. It experiences high summer occupancy and is bordered to the north by Platja de Santa Susanna and to the south by the stormwater drainage system that separates it from Platja dels Pescadors. The beach is situated in a coastal zone with a high hydrological response velocity index.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C15 (Blanes - Pineda de Mar), classified as a deep sandy type with moderate continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 37.1 to 38.4 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.3°C; July 23.3°C; August 24.2°C; September 23.9°C. Predominant wind direction is easterly with weak intensity. Predominant sea state is slight. The Riera Santiago Rusiñol is the main source of fresh water inflow during rainfall events.

Location

Pineda de Mar, Barcelona, Maresme county, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 26,203 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental control includes a minimum of three inspections per week.

Water Quality

Monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections are conducted with a minimum of three inspections per week. Visual parameters evaluated include water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is connected to the Alt Maresme wastewater treatment system, which provides biological treatment with a maximum capacity of 40,000 cubic metres per day and serves 166,666 population equivalents.

Risks

The area is subject to phytoplankton bloom monitoring as part of a dedicated surveillance programme. Occasional short-term episodes may occur. The Riera Santiago Rusiñol occasionally discharges freshwater during rainfall events.
