Platja de Llevant is a beach located in the highly urban environment of Barcelona within the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded by breakwaters at both ends, separating it from the future marine zoo site to the northeast and from Platja de la Nova Mar Bella to the southwest. The beach has a mean width of 30 metres, a length of 218 metres, and experiences high summer occupancy. It features coarse sand sediment with a very steep water entry slope and a coastline evolution rate of -3.6 metres per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is a sandy, enclosed type beach with a surface area of 6,434 square metres. Mean salinity ranges from 37.1 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures vary seasonally: 21.1°C in June, 23.3°C in July, 23.5°C in August, and 22.9°C in September. The sea state is predominantly calm. Significant wave height is 0.74 metres with a mean period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. The water body belongs to the C19 Sant Adrià de Besòs mass of water, classified as sandy shallow type with moderate continental influence.

Location

Barcelona, Spain, in the Barcelonès district. The beach is located within the city limits of Barcelona, which has a population of 1,621,537 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspection is conducted a minimum of three times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, colouration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) jointly conduct weekly quality monitoring during the bathing season.

Risks

During intense rainfall episodes, water inputs from the Bac de Roda breakwater (approximately 300 metres to the southwest) and the Prim breakwater (approximately 300 metres to the northeast) can affect the beach. The system discharges stormwater jointly with a fraction of wastewater through emergency outlets at four different breakwaters (Gas, Bogatell, Bac de Roda, and Prim) during heavy rainfall. The Besòs wastewater treatment system serves the beach area with a principal submarine emissary located at the Parc Nord-Est beach in Sant Adrià de Besòs.
