Platja del Bogatell is a sandy beach located in Barcelona, Spain, within a highly urban environment. The beach is 625 metres long with an average width of 32 metres and a total surface area of 18,676 square metres. It is enclosed between two breakwaters: the Railway Breakwater to the northeast and the Bogatell Breakwater to the southwest. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Mean salinity range: 36.5–38.5 practical salinity units. Water temperature: 21.1°C in June, 23.8°C in July, 24.0°C in August, and 23.4°C in September. Significant wave height: 0.74 metres with a mean period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. Coastal currents are cyclonic in type, with a parallel current to the continental coast and a northeast-directed current. Sediment grain size: coarse sand (D50 = 0.47 mm). Water entry slope: very steep. Coastal line evolution: -2.4 metres per year.

Location

Barcelona, Barcelonès comarca, in the Mediterranean coastal region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated within the city of Barcelona, which has a population of 1,621,537 inhabitants. It is bounded by the Railway Breakwater to the northeast (separating it from Platja de la Mar Bella) and the Bogatell Breakwater to the southwest (separating it from Platja de la Nova Icària).

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring is conducted during 17 consecutive weeks, with microbiological testing weekly on Saturdays and environmental inspections at least 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control is conducted weekly, measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes at least 3 weekly inspections evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, algal blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Besòs sanitation system treats wastewater from Barcelona biologically and discharges through submarine emissaries. During heavy rainfall, combined sewer discharge (DSU) from the Bogatell and Cemetery Poblenou watersheds (681 and 174 hectares respectively) may affect the bathing area.

Risks

During torrential rainfall events, the bathing area may be affected by combined stormwater and wastewater discharges (DSU) from four breakwater outlets (Gas, Bogatell, Bac de Roda, and Prim). The Besòs sanitation system has an emergency emissary that can be activated during such events. Potential presence of hydrocarbons and other harmful substances may occur.
