Platja de la Mar Bella is a sandy beach located in Barcelona, Spain, within a highly urban environment. The beach is 515 metres long with an average width of 43 metres and a total surface area of 20,845 square metres. It is wedged between two breakwaters: the Bac de Roda breakwater to the northeast and the Ferrocarril breakwater to the southwest. The beach experiences high summer occupancy and has medium-grain sand with a very steep water entry slope.

Predominant sea state: flat. Significant wave height: 0.74 metres, average period: 6 seconds, most frequent direction: SSW. Continental influence level: moderate. Water mass classification: C19 Sant Adrià de Besòs (sandy shallow type with moderate continental influence).

Location

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, in the Barcelonès county. The beach is situated within Barcelona city limits, which has a population of 1,664,882 inhabitants.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) from June to September each year according to Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007. Quality assessment is based on fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Water quality is classified into four annual categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient, determined using statistical analysis of the last four monitoring seasons.

Risks

During heavy rainfall events, water discharges from the Bac de Roda breakwater can affect the bathing area. These are combined storm and wastewater discharges (DSU system discharges) from a drainage basin of 178 hectares. In intensive rainfall episodes, discharges from the Bogatell breakwater located approximately 300 metres to the south may also affect the beach. The beach has a very steep water entry slope.
